When we talk about our favorite bowling balls in our arsenal in comparison with our teammates, the differences in our style of play play an important part in what we consider to be our favorite pieces.
We ask: What’s in your Bowling DNA? What follows below will help determine the traits in your game that will help match different balls to different conditions.
When an experienced pro shop operator looks at a bowler’s game to help recommend a new addition to their arsenal, these are the factors they consider:
- Ball Speed – Low, Medium, or High Ball Speed. Ball speed can range from under 10 miles per hour to over 20 miles per hour.
- Rev Rate – How quickly do you revolve the ball at release? Rev rates can range from under 100 to over 500 Revolutions per Minute.
- Axis Tilt – The higher the Axis Tilt, the longer the ball skids down the lane. Tilt is measured in degrees from 0 to 90 degrees.
- Axis Rotation – The higher rotation you have, the more the ball will hook. Lower axis rotation means the ball rolls on a straighter path.
For example, a bowler who has a high rev rate and medium to slow ball speed might consider the Phaze II their favorite ball on heavier volumes or longer patterns, whereas a bowler with a higher ball speed may call the Harsh Reality their favorite.
The goal is to get what we call “Matched Up.” That means the bowler and their bowling ball complement the oil volume and pattern distance.
Make sure you work with your local pro shop operator to help collect the data that can help get you matched up.
Storm has a tool that can help you sort through your personal stats and select the right ball, called the Matchmaker. The tool also has links to help you collect the data that makes up your bowling style.
