Tang Makes History at the 2026 PBA Chameleon Championship
Darren Tang won the PBA Chameleon Championship, claiming his second career national PBA Tour title and becoming the first player in PBA history to win a PBA Tour National Title as both a one-handed and two-handed player.
"Winning my second title meant so much because it was in the setting we all dream of being in. On TV, family front row, against the greatest bowler of all time. The only thing better would've been a double in the tenth to do it!"
Tang defeated Boog Krol, Santtu Tahvanainen, and Jason Belmonte to prevail in the 12-player bracket finals, using a single Storm Concept ball for nearly the entire event.
"The Concept provided a controlled shape, but plenty of curve. It surprisingly allowed me to continue using it as I moved left. Even as far as left of 20 at the arrows."
A Career Built on Resilience
After a successful youth and collegiate career, Tang became a full-time PBA Tour player in 2016. He picked up several PBA Regional titles and was named the 2016 PBA West and Northwest Region Rookie of the Year. In 2021, he won his first PBA National Tour Title at the Bowlerstore.com Classic in Coldwater, Ohio.
In addition to his success on the lanes, Tang has been among the group of younger players who recognized that a digital presence was an important piece of building a brand in today's game. He developed a strong following on YouTube, showing fans what life really looks like as a touring professional.
The next several years fell well below his expectations and standards, but Tang wasn't willing to walk away. He got healthy, made changes to his physical game, and worked with coaches to sharpen everything. Still, consistent cuts and match play remained out of his reach.
The Two-Handed Transition
In 2025, enough was enough. Tang made the transition to two hands — a decision that most professionals would never consider mid-career. Most pros spend their entire careers mastering one style; Tang was starting over while still competing on the biggest stage in the sport.
"I wouldn't say doubt, but a lot of frustration. I knew it was going to take time, but that didn't make the pain of bad performance sting any less. Funny to look back and see how bad my 2025 WSOB was — to breaking through at the same event a year later."
The gamble paid off. This season, he cashed in nine of twelve tournaments and every event since March 23.
Championship Sunday
On Sunday, Tang entered the bracket as the No. 2 seed. He opened with a dominant 242–195 win over Krol, then survived a tighter 201–192 match over Tahvanainen to earn his spot in the championship match. Next up, he'd face Jason Belmonte — the man more responsible than anyone for the two-handed revolution in professional bowling. Tang defeated him in the Race-to-Two to claim the title.
His parents, girlfriend, and family members who flew in for the occasion were all seated in the front row. The first hug after he knew he had won went to his mom, who got to witness this historic win on Mother's Day.
"There's something comforting knowing the people who are most important to you are there to support. Knowing good or bad, they're there for you. Fortunately, I was on the right side of it, and it was an incredible moment. The only thing that would've made it better is if my brother was there to share the moment with us."
Tang isn't stopping to celebrate for long. He will bowl tonight on the Scorpion Championship, which starts at 7 PM Eastern on CBS Sports Network. He has also made the finals of the 2026 PBA World Championship, set to air on CBS Sports Network on June 13.
