The 900 Global Portal is designed to combine strong-cover traction with clean front-lane travel and a sharp response at the breakpoint.
Its RB92™ Solid coverstock and Power Edge™ factory finish create the Portal's intended Skid-Flip shape: clean through the heads, Late into its hook phase and Quick when it encounters friction.
That factory reaction will not match every condition. Adding surface gives bowlers a way to move the Portal's motion earlier and create a smoother, more controlled version of the same ball.
The Portal at Power Edge
Power Edge helps the Portal clear the front of the lane and preserve its strongest motion for downlane.
This reaction is useful when:
- There is oil through the front and friction downlane
- Earlier-reading balls are using too much energy in the front
- You need to move inside and create recovery downlane
- A smoother ball does not provide enough backend motion
- You need traction without an early hook phase
At Power Edge, the Portal provides its cleanest front-lane travel and most defined breakpoint.
What Happens When You Add Surface?
Adding surface allows the RB92 Solid coverstock to create traction sooner.
The Portal begins reading the lane earlier, produces more motion through the midlane and responds more smoothly at the breakpoint. Its overall shape becomes more blended and less angular.
With additional surface, expect the Portal to:
- Pick up earlier in the oil
- Create a stronger midlane read
- Enter its hook phase sooner
- Produce a smoother response to friction
- Show less dramatic direction change downlane
The adjustment shifts some of the Portal's motion away from the breakpoint and into the middle of the lane.
When Adding Surface Makes Sense
The Portal Skids Too Far
If the Portal passes the intended breakpoint before establishing traction, adding surface can help it read the lane sooner.
A small adjustment may be enough to create an earlier read without completely removing the Portal's downlane response.
The Portal Is Too Quick Off the Dry
The Portal's Quick response can become difficult to control when the transition between oil and friction is especially sharp.
Adding surface can help the ball begin transitioning sooner and produce a more gradual change of direction. This creates a smoother reaction instead of an abrupt jump off the dry.
The Lane Requires More Midlane Traction
On conditions with more oil or less friction downlane, the Power Edge finish may create too much skid.
Additional surface strengthens the Portal's midlane read and helps it create a more dependable transition before reaching the breakpoint.
You Want a More Controlled Portal Shape
The Portal does not always need to produce its sharpest possible backend motion.
Adding surface can create a more stable version of the ball for situations where traction and control are more valuable than maximum direction change.
Make the Adjustment Strategically
Begin with the reaction you see on the lane. Identify whether the Portal needs to read sooner, create more midlane traction or respond more smoothly to friction.
Make one controlled adjustment, test the reaction and record the change. Surface affects every bowler differently, so the correct preparation will depend on the bowler's release, layout and lane condition.
A qualified pro shop can help select and reproduce an adjustment based on the reaction you need.

Choose the Portal Reaction You Need
Keep the Portal at Power Edge when you need its cleanest travel through the front and its quickest response downlane.
Add surface when you need the ball to create traction sooner, strengthen its midlane read or produce a smoother transition at the breakpoint.
Both reactions come from the same Portal. Surface simply allows you to choose where and how its motion appears.
