Inside the 900 Global Portal: A Different Approach to Strong Solid Performance

Inside the 900 Global Portal: A Different Approach to Strong Solid Performance

Strong solid bowling balls are typically expected to create traction early, establish control in the midlane and produce a smoother overall shape. The 900 Global Portal takes a different approach.

The Portal is built to provide the traction of a strong solid while delaying its strongest motion until farther downlane. Instead of immediately using its energy in the front of the lane, it is designed to clear the heads, retain energy and respond quickly when it reaches friction.

That reaction comes from the interaction between three elements: the all-new Conduit™ A.I. Core, the RB92™ Solid coverstock and the Power Edge™ factory finish. Together, they create a solid ball with a Skid-Flip shape, a Late hook phase and a Quick response to friction.

A Stronger Ball Built to Make Its Strongest Move Later

The Portal is not designed to be the earliest ball in the 900 Global lineup. Its purpose is to create traction without forcing the ball into an early, slow reaction.

Through the front of the lane, the Portal travels cleaner than its solid coverstock might suggest. This allows it to preserve more of its motion for the breakpoint. Once it encounters dependable friction, it produces a sharp and defined change of direction.

This makes the Portal particularly useful when an earlier-reading ball begins hooking too soon or using too much energy before reaching the breakpoint. It can also provide additional traction and recovery when a cleaner option does not read the lane strongly enough.

The result is a different kind of strong-ball reaction: clean through the front, capable of reading the lane and aggressive where the bowler needs it downlane.

The Conduit A.I. Core Controls the Timing

At the center of the Portal is the new asymmetrical Conduit A.I. Core. Its design is built around a specific objective: delay the ball's transition through the front of the lane, then create a forceful move once the ball reaches friction.

At 15 pounds, the Conduit A.I. Core has:

  • RG: 2.59
  • Differential: 0.050
  • Intermediate differential: 0.019

Each number describes a different part of the core's motion potential.

High RG Helps the Portal Clear the Heads

Radius of gyration, or RG, helps describe how quickly a bowling ball begins to rev. A lower-RG core generally starts transitioning sooner, while a higher-RG core resists revving as early.

The Portal's 2.59 RG helps it travel through the front of the lane without immediately entering its hook phase. That delayed transition allows the ball to retain more of its motion for the later portion of the lane.

This is an important part of what separates the Portal from an earlier-reading strong solid. The ball still has the cover strength needed to create traction, but the core does not encourage it to use that traction immediately.

High Differential Creates Flare and Direction Change

Differential represents the core's flare potential and its ability to create overall direction change. As the Portal travels down the lane, its 0.050 differential allows the ball track to migrate across the cover, continually exposing fresh surface to the lane.

That flare supports the Portal's ability to create traction and make a stronger move downlane. Combined with the delayed transition created by its high RG, the high differential helps produce the Portal's defined Skid-Flip motion.

The Portal does not simply travel farther because it has a high RG, nor does it change direction only because it has a high differential. Its reaction comes from how those core characteristics work together with the coverstock, surface, layout, lane condition and the bowler's release.

Asymmetry Makes the Breakpoint More Defined

The Conduit A.I. Core is asymmetrical, with an intermediate differential of 0.019 at 15 pounds. This asymmetry contributes to how quickly and distinctly the ball transitions once it begins changing direction.

Rather than creating a slow, rounded transition, the Portal is designed to respond quickly when it encounters friction. This produces a more visible separation between its clean front-lane travel and its backend motion.

The combination of high RG, high differential and asymmetry gives the Portal the ability to save its strongest motion and release it farther downlane.

Core Specifications by Weight

The Portal is available from 12 through 16 pounds. Because its core numbers change by weight, bowlers should use the specifications for the weight they actually intend to drill.

Weight RG Differential Intermediate Differential
16 lb 2.58 0.053 0.021
15 lb 2.59 0.050 0.019
14 lb 2.61 0.049 0.018
13 lb 2.56 0.034 0.011
12 lb 2.58 0.031 0.009

These numbers describe the core's motion potential. The reaction a bowler sees will also vary with surface preparation, layout, ball speed, rev rate and lane condition.

RB92 Solid Provides the Traction

A core cannot create the Portal's intended reaction without a coverstock capable of reading the lane. For the Portal, 900 Global selected RB92 Solid.

RB92 Solid provides the traction necessary for the ball to establish contact with the lane and avoid skating past the breakpoint. It gives the Portal the lane-reading ability expected from a stronger solid coverstock.

However, traction alone would not create the Portal's intended shape. If the cover responded too strongly in the heads, the ball could begin hooking before the Conduit A.I. Core had an opportunity to preserve and release its motion downlane.

That is where the factory finish becomes important.

Power Edge Helps Preserve the Intended Shape

The Portal is finished with Power Edge, which helps the RB92 Solid cover travel more cleanly through the front of the lane.

This creates a deliberate balance. RB92 Solid supplies the traction, while Power Edge helps delay how quickly that traction affects the ball. The cover can still read the lane, but it does not force the Portal into its strongest motion immediately after release.

Together, RB92 Solid and Power Edge allow the Portal to bridge the gap between traction and response:

  • Clean enough to preserve energy through the heads
  • Strong enough to establish traction
  • Quick enough to create a defined move at the breakpoint

The finish does not make the coverstock weak, and the coverstock does not turn the Portal into an early-traction ball. Each component supports a different part of the intended reaction.

What the Portal's Motion Looks Like

The Portal's motion can be understood through three characteristics.

Shape of Motion: Skid-Flip

The Portal skids easily through the front of the lane before producing a sharp, high-energy move at the breakpoint. This gives the ball recovery when the bowler needs to move inside and create more entry angle.

Hook Phase Timing: Late

The Portal begins its strongest transition farther downlane. Its high RG and Power Edge finish help it preserve motion through the heads rather than entering the hook phase too early.

Responsiveness to Friction: Quick

When the Portal encounters dry boards, it responds quickly and creates a visible change of direction. The RB92 Solid cover provides the traction necessary to read the lane, while the Conduit A.I. Core helps turn that traction into a defined backend move.

When the Portal Makes Sense

The Portal is designed for conditions that provide oil through the front of the lane and dependable friction at the breakpoint.

Consider the Portal when:

  • A stronger solid begins hooking too early
  • An earlier-reading ball loses energy before reaching the breakpoint
  • A cleaner ball does not create enough traction
  • A smoother reaction does not provide enough backend motion
  • You are moving inside and need the ball to recover downlane
  • You need a sharp response from a solid coverstock

The Portal is less appropriate when the lanes are dry or heavily burned, when the breakpoint does not provide reliable friction or when the bowler needs an early, smooth and controlled shape.

It is also unnecessary when the ball already in use is creating too much direction change. The Portal's defined response is a specific tool, not a universal solution for every lane condition.

A Solid Ball With a Different Job

The Portal's defining quality is not simply that it is strong. Its defining quality is when and where that strength appears.

The RB92 Solid coverstock gives it the traction to read the lane. Power Edge helps it remain clean through the front. The Conduit A.I. Core uses its high RG to delay transition and its high differential to create flare and direction change downlane.

Together, those elements create a strong solid that does not need to produce an early hook phase to create motion.

For bowlers who need solid-cover traction but do not want to sacrifice clean front-lane travel or backend response, the Portal provides a distinct way to attack the lane: get through the front, preserve the motion and make the strongest move last.
