Bowling News USA - August 5, 2014 Scroggins Brothers Name Members of 10-Lefty Group for 2015 USBC Open Championships

JEFF RICHGELS | 11thframe.com

The waiting is over for the many left-handers who expressed interest in competing with an all-lefty 10-player group organized by brothers Mike and Mark Scroggins for the 2015 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.

As I wrote in this blog after they announced the idea, I have long told left-handers who ask me that they should do the same thing as smart right-handers and form a 10-player group that will work together at the Open Championships.

When Mike became eligible for the Open Championships again for 2015, he and Mark — two of the country’s best lefties — decided to do it.

Mark Scroggins said my blog and Storm sharing it helped he and Mike get more than 60 responses from left-handers wanting to join the group.

“It wasn't easy to narrow it down to 8 players,” Mark said on Facebook on Monday. “I want to thank everyone that took the time and effort to respond. It was amazing to get that type of response. After many debates and rearranging here are the rosters of our 2 lefty teams.”

Before we get to those names, Mark posted on Facebook late last week that he would announce the 10 members of the two teams on Monday on Facebook. The prompted David Waswo of The Bowlers Show to contact Mark and offer to let him do it live on his excellent radio show Sunday evening.

You can listen to Mark on the show here as he announces the players and talks about how the team will get ready to compete.

Now, here are the two teams in Mark’s words:

Roto Grip’s Sinisters
Mike Scroggins - Amarillo TX, Captain

Rich Wolfe - Culpeper VA, 60 300's 10 800's, 4 PBA regional Titles (long time PBA Tour player)
Daron Hansen - Brooklyn Center MN, 58 300's 36 800's, 7 MN state titles
Brett Spangler - Anderson IN, 1 PBA regional title, MOTIV rep
Jack Zuniga - Tulsa OK, 1 PBA regional title, 36 300's

Storm's Southpaws
Mark Scroggins - Canyon TX, Captain
Mike Stlles - Winter Haven FL, 7 300's 6 800's, nickname "silk"
Ken McNeeley - Morganton NC, 49 300's, Tour player in 90's
Taylor Coggins - Burleson TX, collegiate standout at West Texas A&M, 1 PBA regional title, 5 300's
Anggie Ramirez - Bogota Columbia, collegiate standout at Univ Maryland Eastern Shore, 4-time All-American, 2012 & 2013 Columbia National Champ.

“I'm looking forward to bowling with this group, I feel like this group could put up some numbers,” Mark said.

From what I have seen in reaction to the group, they will have a large following when they bowl on June 21-22. Hopefully, USBC will be able to webcast them.

The most interesting part is to see how 10 lefties break down the pattern and adjust as that amount of adjustment is not something most lefties have ever experienced. If it's a pattern that needs management, it could help them do much better than lefties alone do. But if it's an open pattern to start they may struggle more than lone lefties (or small groups).

Here is what Hansen posted on Facebook about being part of the group:
"I found out about my selection to this team last week. I am amazed at the names on this list and am excited to see what we can do in El Paso. While it was a difficult decision to step away from my group, this is an opportunity I couldn't turn down. El Paso will be my 25th consecutive USBC and being able to compete with the 9 other names on this list is one heck of a way to celebrate. I trust that my current teammates Jeff Anderson, Dan Beckjorden, Jason Hanson, Jason Guest, Matt Schleppenbach, Doug Manhart, Eric Schacht, Jason Barnhouse, and John Hommes, will understand and support this decision. It is going to be an interesting ride going into 2015 and one that I am very much looking forward to."

And here is what Ramirez posted:
"I feel so honored and happy that Mark Scroggins reached out to me and offer to be a part of this experience! Can't wait for next years nationals!!! ‪#‎StormSouthpaws"
