Bowling News USA - April 8, 2013 PBA50 Tour Ready to Roll in Florida...

At age 50, Storm's Pete Weber shows no signs of slowing down.

The 37-time PBA Tour champion is coming off a two-tournament winning streak and now he takes his show to the season opener of the 2013 PBA50 Tour (formerly Senior Tour) season at the Pasco County Suncoast Open benefitting Wounded Warriors April 14-17 at Lane Glo Bowl in New Port Richey, Fla.

A little more than a week ago Weber won his second Tournament of Champions title, and his PBA League team, the New York City WTT KingPins presented by GEICO, owned by tennis legend Billie Jean King, won the inaugural PBA League Elias Cup.

Beginning April 15, he will be among a field of approximately 120 players 50 years of age and older who will compete during the 11-tournament PBA50 Tour season.

The 1992 PBA Hammer Senior Open - The first time a Storm bowling ball made a nationally televised PBA (Senior) telecast.

“I have no thoughts about retiring,” said Weber, “Until I feel like I can’t win I’ll keep bowling. From a schedule standpoint, the regular tour is still the priority but I’m going into the senior tour with the same determination and that’s to win.”

Weber won the Tournament of Champions – PBA’s signature tournament – on March 31 in Indianapolis by defeating Jason Belmonte 224-179 in the title match. The victory made Weber the first player to complete the PBA Triple Crown for a second time tying bowling legend Earl Anthony for most major PBA titles with 10. He also became the tournament’s oldest champion at age 50.

In Sunday’s Elias Cup Finals seen on ESPN, his KingPins PBA League team, with teammates Tommy Jones, John Szczerbinski, Scott Norton, Jack Jurek and Kelly Kulick) defeated the Motown Muscle (Mike Fagan, Tom Smallwood, Ronnie Russell, Jesse Buss and DJ Archer) owned by football great Jerome Bettis, 440-407, to win the title.

Another player who competes on both of PBA tours is Hall of Famer and reigning PBA50 Senior Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla.  Williams, the leader in career PBA Tour titles with 47, is competing in his fourth PBA50 Tour season.

During the 2012 PBA50 season the four-time Senior Tour titlist won two titles and had six top-five finishes in nine tournaments entered.

Other Hall of Famers entered who gained fame on the regular PBA Tour and have extended their careers in senior competition include Johnny Petraglia, Tom Baker, Amleto Monacelli, Dale Eagle, and Wayne Webb.

Thirty players from Florida have entered the tournament. Another notable player scheduled to compete is two-time PBA50 Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska who has traveled the farthest to compete in New Port Richey – nearly 4,000 miles.

Throughout the 2013 PBA50 Tour season, players will be competing for the opportunity to advance to the nationally-televised PBA50 Tour Finals which will be conducted as part of the World Series of Bowling V in Las Vegas in November. The top three players in points at the conclusion of the season will advance to the PBA50 Tour Finals.

Suncoast Open competition begins on Monday April 15 with qualifying rounds beginning at 8 a.m. Qualifying continues on April 16 after which the field will be cut to the top 40 to begin match play on April 17.  Match play continues all day on the 17th with championship rounds to begin at 5:30 p.m.  Practice and pro-ams will be conducted on Sunday April 14. Admission is $10 which is good for all three days of competition (April 15, 16 and 17).

The Lucas, Green & Magazine Pro-Am on April 14 gives area amateurs the opportunity to bowl with the pros.  Squads are scheduled for 3 and 5:30 p.m. Entry fee is only $39 for adults and $19 for kids. There will also be a Corporate Charity Challenge which allows companies to help raise money for the WWP while a team of their employees bowl with the pros in a fun format.
