Bowling News USA - July 14, 2014 Dominating Performance by Singapore Youths, Using Storm

U22 Leg 1 winners L-R: 2nd Place Kiew, Champion Kuek and 3rd Place Elangovan

Singapore youths put in a dominating performance during the first leg of the U22 Bowlers’ Circuit 2014 by Asian Intercity Bowling Council by sweeping the top 14 positions at Superbowl Jurong on Sunday.

In a all-Singapore championship round, top seed, Kuek Qi En defeated third-seed and challenger, Marcus Kiew, 213-202 to win the Singapore leg title. The champion had earlier ousted fourth-seed, Darren Ong, 245-223 to reach the finals.

Kiew sailed past second-seed, Suresh Elangovan 214-173 to face Kuek in the finals. The first runner-up also cruised to the semi-finals after an easy victory over Basil Ng, 207-169 in Round 4 while Elangovan beat Danish Ramlan, 223-192 for his place in the semi.

Kuek advanced as top seed after a hard earned a 2-1 victory over Muhammed Danial Zheng Yi in Round 3 finals. Elangovan beat Ramsey Lim, 2-0, Kiew needed to go into a third game decider when he beat Brandan Tan 2-1.

Of the 20 places in Round 2 finals, AK Mohd Ardhi Omar Ali and Abu Khaledi Yussrri Abu Bakar of Brunei, Mohd Haziq Bin Sahli and Syaffique Ikhwan were the only non-Singaporeans vying for Round 3.

But AK Mohd Ardhi lost to Dareen Ong, 1-2, Abu Khaledi went down to Amanda Lee, 1-2, Mohd Haziq was knocked out by Basil Ng 0-2 and Syaffique also lost to Charlene Lim Jia Yi, 1-2.

The champion pocketed S$2,600, Kiew earned S$1,300 and Elangovan picked up S$650. All the top 3 winners also received a Storm bowling ball each. Darren Ong, Norman Cai, Danish Ramlan and Amanda Lee finished fourth to seventh positions respectively.

During the qualifying rounds, Kuek Qi En, Suresh Elangovan and Amanda Lee all received a Storm bowling ball each for winning the daily high series award. Scholarship vouchers were also provided to the top winners along with bowling equipment presented by sponsor, Storm Bowling Products.

A total of 69 bowlers from six Asian Intercity members and guest cities participated in this leg. They are from Guam, Malaysia, Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam and host Singapore.

The second leg will be hosted by Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 18 to 20 and the third leg by Ho Chih Minh, Vietnam in August. The Grand Finale will be held in conjuction with this year’s Asian Intercity Bowling Championship to be held in San Juan, Philippines.
