Bowling News USA - March 20, 2014 Sharon Powers To 24th Annual Golden Ladies Classic Tournament Win!

Sharon Powers, Lakewood, Colorado defeated 2013 Golden Ladies Classic champion Tish Johnson 257 - 237 in the title match to win Jeanette Robinson’s 24th Annual Golden Ladies Classic Tournament March 20 at the Orleans Bowling Center.

The tournament was sponsored by Storm Products.

Powers worked her way up the ladder to the final match against qualifying leader Johnson. In the pressure packed final, both players rolled plenty of strikes. Powers got it going in the 4th frame, rolling a seven-bagger which gave her the victory. Hall of Famer Johnson never missed the pocket, but left three 7-pins along the way that proved to be the difference.

It was the first big national championship for Powers, a member of the Colorado Bowling Hall of Fame. For Johnson, a 25-time pro tour champion, it was a frustrating runner-up finish because she held more than a 400 pin lead over second place going into the finals. Powers earned $2200 for the win, and Johnson took home $1100.

In matches leading to the title game, Powers ran the table. In the first match, she defeated fifth place finisher Kristy Whicher 236-222. Powers then rolled by Oklahoma’s Lil Johnson 247-225, and advanced to the top by defeating Pam Pancoast 236-202. Pancoast cashed for $800, Johnson earned $700 for 4th place, and Whicher’s 5th place check was $600.

The 2014 event laid a good foundation for the 25th Anniversary of the GLC coming next year. Hall of Famer bowler and former Orleans House Pro Jeanette Robinson started the event in 1991 when she held the same position at the famous Showboat Lanes in Vegas. Robinson moved the event to the Orleans in 1998. She proudly presented the trophies to this year’s winners.

A record field of 109 senior women age 50 or better rolled in the 2014 event, including bowlers from Canada, Australia, and the Virgin Islands. It was also one of the highest scoring events, with three 300 games, by Tish Johnson, Rene Fleming, and Connie Palmer.

Palmer also took home the Super Senior trophy, for players age 60+. She averaged a remarkable 225 for the week. In other side action, raffles were held on bowling balls donated by event sponsor Storm Bowling Products. $700 was raised for the USBC  Susan G Komen Bowl for the Cure fund.

The 2014 GLC is also the first jewel in the Triple Crown for Senior women. The player having the highest finish in this event combined with the 2014 Senior U.S. Open and the Senior Queens will be the 2014 Triple Crown Winner at year end.
