Bowling News USA - August 22, 2013 Elite Youth Tour Rolls Through Minnesota!

The Elite Youth Tour awarded nearly $4,400 in scholarships to youth bowlers at its most recent stop at Island Xtreme Bowl in Welch, MN on Aug. 11. The Under 20 Boys’ Division stole the show after a close first round in the single elimination portion of the tournament and a roll-off in the final match.

The  Elite Youth Tour is sponsored by Storm Products.

The single elimination match between Charlie Walters and Brennen Haugh all came down to the tenth frame to determine who would move on to the next round. Unfortunately, Haugh missed a single-pin spare to lose to Walters, 181-180. Although he was knocked out in the first match of the single elimination round, Haugh took home a $200 scholarship for his efforts.

The close competition didn’t stop there, as the title match between Nick Pate and Cole Meredith also came down to the tenth frame. Pate left a 4-6 split in the tenth frame and picked up one pin to tie Meredith for a 193 game. The match was forced into a ninth and tenth frame roll-off where Pate tallied up 37 pins to Meredith’s 39.

Meredith took home the tournament’s largest scholarship award of $1,000.

In addition to Meredith, three other bowlers took home titles at the EYT event. The champions include: Kayla Smith (Under 15 Girls’ Division), Nicholas Munson (Under 15 Boys’ Division) and Taylor Nguyen (Under 20 Girls’ Division).

In the Under 15 Girls’ Division, Kayla Smith earned top honors after surviving the eliminator rounds with games of 126, 205 and 154, respectively. She took home an $80 scholarship for her efforts.

Nicholas Munson earned first place in the Under 15 Boys’ Division. Munson qualified for the eliminator after finishing in fourth place in the qualifying round of eight games. He earned a $300 scholarship for his performance at the EYT stop.

Taylor Nguyen earned her title in the Under 20 Girls’ Division after her steady performance throughout the tournament. Nguyen finished the qualifying round in third place to earn her spot in the eliminator round. She remained a strong contender and came out on top with a $500 scholarship for her showing.

The next EYT stops are scheduled for Nov. 3 at Sam’s Town Casino in Las Vegas, NV and Nov. 17 at Super Bowl in Appleton, WI. The Appleton stop will consist of an EYT training session and doubles sweeper tournament on Nov. 16 at the same location.
