Bowling News USA - June 13, 2013 Matchplay Begins at USBC Senior Masters...33 of 64 Players Using Storm/Roto Grip

Venezuela's Amleto Monacelli earned top qualifier honors Wednesday at the 2013 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters and leads a group of 64 players who advanced to match play.

Monacelli, a USBC and PBA Hall of Famer, finished the 15 games of qualifying with 3,353 (223.5 average) at the South Point Bowling Center.

Storm Regional Sales Manager Jim Callahan reports that 33 out of the 64 players to make matchplay are using Storm or Roto Grip equipment.

"Our staff guys have a really good look," said Callahan. "The lanes played very tight In the track and they used the new Kegel Oil Ice. It does not move."

The top 64 players advanced to the double-elimination match-play bracket, which will get underway Thursday at 8 a.m. Pacific. The bracket will determine the final five bowlers who will compete for the title in the stepladder finals Friday at 3 p.m. Pacific.

Monacelli, a 19-time PBA Tour winner, put together his best five-game block of the tournament in Wednesday's third round, finishing with 1,131 on games of 224, 202, 224, 237 and 244.

"I feel good because I know the lanes are not really easy this week," said Monacelli, who won the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Storm last week. "You have to throw the ball really well to get to the pocket, but the carry is the thing I need to really work on."

After the second round, Monacelli wasn't happy with how he was throwing the ball but he regrouped heading into the third round.
"I was feeling tired from working out and bowling so much," Monacelli said. "This morning, I took it easy and decided not to work out, and I bowled much better today."

Wayne Webb of Grove City, Ohio, jumped into second place after qualifying with 3,339, while Pete Weber of Saint Ann, Mo., is third with 3,324. Randy Pederson of Clermont, Fla., is fourth with 3,303, and Mark Williams of Beaumont, Texas, rounds out the top five with 3,278.

Defending champion Mike Edwards of Tulsa qualified in the No. 9 position with 3,223.

Two of the three women in the field advanced to match play as USBC Hall of Famers Tish Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Robin Romeo of Newhall, Calif., finished among the top 64. Johnson qualified 30th with 3,112, while Romeo was 55th with 3,050.

Romeo previously made history when she became the first, and only, woman to make match play at the Senior Masters in 2007.
