Bowling News USA - April 24, 2013 Sam Cooley Storms To Asian Bowling Federation Title...

Sam Cooley  of Australia and Malaysia's Wendy Chai captured the men's and women's title in the first combined event of the 2013 Asian Bowling Federation Tour, the third overall, Tuesday at S.F. Strike Bowl Ngamwongwan in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

The top 16 men and the top 16 women in the 39th MWA Thailand International Open advanced to the ABF Tour Thailand, which featured four rounds of single-elimination one-game matches.

Cooley, 21, the gold medalist in All Events at the 2012 World Youth Championships, averaged 248.25 en route to his first title on the Asian Bowling Federation Tour. He topped former World Ranking Masters champion Khalid Al-Dubyyan of Kuwait, in the opening Round of 16, 243-208, and then eliminated Al-Dubyyan's compatriot, Rakan Al-Amiri, in the quarterfinals, 241-212.

The semifinal match against another Kuwaiti, Basel Al-Anzi was a strike fest, in which Cooley advanced with a huge 279-257 win. The Aussie carried the momentum into the title match against local favorite Dechochai Tinjiratip and cruised to victory with a final 237-195 win.

On the women's side, 2010 ABF Tour Tournament of Champions winner, Wendy Chai, and Hong Kong's Milki Ng faced seven Thai and seven Indonesian players. Ng and all seven local bowlers were eliminated in the Rounds of 16 and 8.

Chai defeated two Thai bowlers, Angkana Netrviseth, Thailand, 225-182, and Natthida Sertluecha, Thailand, 240-213, to advance to the semifinals together with three Indonesian women.

Chai rolled the lone 200 game in the semifinals defeating Cheya Chantika, 201-180, to meet Sharon Limansantoso in the finale, who edged Shinta Noen, 172-166. Chai took down Limansantoso, 216-188, to captured her fourth win on the Asian Bowling Federation Tour.

The 2013 ABF Tour consists of nine legs, four in the Middle East with a men's division only and five in East and South East Asia featuring men and women in separate divisions. The fourth tournament is the ABFT Egypt leg on May 1.
