Bowling News USA - October 20, 2012 Robin Romeo Red Hot at Senior Queens

United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Robin Romeo of Van Nuys, Calif., took the lead Friday after the opening round of the 2012 USBC Senior Queens presented by Storm.

Romeo finished the first round of qualifying with a five-game total of 1,185 (237 average) at the International Training and Research Center. She leads a field of 56 of the top senior women bowlers age 50 and older in the country.

"I wanted to come out and get off to a good start," said Romeo, who won the Senior U.S. Women's Open earlier this year. "I just tried to do what the lane was telling me to do and not over read the ball reaction. It seemed to be a good way to go."

Romeo, who had games of 258, 205, 246, 226 and 250, leads Rosa Mendez of Miami by 33 pins. Mendez sits in second with 1,152, while Mandy Wilson of Dayton, Ohio, is third with 1,143.

All participants will bowl 15 games of qualifying over three days before the field is cut to the top 15 plus defending champion Paula Vidad of Sun City, Calif., for the double-elimination match-play bracket starting Monday.

BowlTV is providing free live streaming coverage of every round of the competition, concluding with the four-player stepladder finals Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Eastern.

The Senior Queens also caps off the Senior Women's Triple Crown Series, which is a special competition for bowlers who compete in the Senior Queens, Senior U.S. Women's Open and National Golden Ladies Classic.

The top 10 players in the Triple Crown standings, which combines qualifying totals from all three events, will take part in the Triple Crown Shoot-Out presented by The Orleans live on BowlTV on Sunday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
