Bowling News USA - April 9, 2012 2012 Tournament of Champions Underway at Red Rock...

Tom Daugherty of Wesley Chapel, Fla., who set one of the most infamous records in Professional Bowlers Association history in the nationally-televised finals of the 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions, jumped into the early lead in the Champions Round of the TOC Monday at Red Rock Lanes.

Daugherty, who bowled the lowest televised game in PBA history – a 100 game in a 299-100 loss to eventual champion Mika Koivuniemi in the 2011 finals – averaged 246.14 for seven games Monday morning for a 1,723 pinfall total and a 71-pin lead over Jim Pratt of Glendale, Ariz.

“I’m doing fine as long as there are no TV lights,” Daugherty said with a smile.

The field of 32 Champions Round players will bowl a second seven-game session later Monday. After 14 games, 21 of the 32 will advance to Tuesday’s Elite Round. The Champions Round consists of players who have won a PBA Regional, Senior Tour or Women’s Series title. Players in the Elite Round include PBA Tour title winners and players who are exempt for the 2011-12 PBA Tour season.
