Storm International star Andres Gomez of Bogota and collegiate standout Maria Rodriguez of Tolima won the 2012 Colombian Team Trials which concluded Dec. 17 at Andres Escobar Bowling Complex in Medellin.
All players - men and women - had to bowl a total of 48 games, eight games per day on six different World Tenpin Bowling Association oil patterns. The top six men and the top six women earned automatic berths into Team Colombia.
Gomez averaged 222.04 including four series between 1750 and 1791, a high series of 1911 and a low series of 1644. The right-hander rolled the second of two 300 games in the men's trials in his fifth block. 11th place Harvey Ramos, Bogota, had the first in block two.
Gomez, a long-time national team member, totaled 10658 pins to hold a 273-pin lead over Jaime Monroy, Bogota, who was second with 10385.
Gomez and Monroy hold the World Championships record for one game in Doubles with 599. Gomez had 300 and Monroy 299 in the 1999 World Championships in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Two more players from Bogota made the 2012 men's team as Oscar Rodriguez and World Games champion Manuel Otalora landed in fourth and sixth place with 10190 and 10121, respectively.
The remaining spots went to players from Risaralda. Fabio Garcia was third with 10190 and Jaime Gonzalez fifth with 10181.
Maria Rodriguez Tolima, was the sole woman, who cracked the 10.000-pin bar. She averaged 210.35 for her 48 games including high series of 1816, 1764 and 1710. Rodriguez who was named the 2011 NCAA Division I Player of the Year by the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA), finished 277 pins ahead of two-time World Champion and World Ranking Masters winner, Clara Juliana Guerrero. Guerrero, who lives in Texas but bowls for Quindio, was second with 9820 and an average of 204.58.
Rounding out the top six were four women from Bogota. Andres' sister, Paola Gomez, was mere nine pins behind Guerrero in third place with 9811. Rocio Restrepo was 198 pins behind Gomez in fourth with 9613 and was followed by Johanna Puentes in fifth place with 9604. Natalia Rico took the sixth and last place with 9528 and an average of 198.50.
Rodriguez, Guerrero, Gomez and Restrepo were members of the national squad that has won the bronze medal in the five-player team event at the 2011 Women's World Championships in Hong Kong, China.
The men's and women's team will bowl in the 2012 PABCON Men's and Women's Championships Aug. 18-26 at Sunset Station's Strike Zone Bowling Center in Henderson, Nev., United States. The championships will be used as qualifier for the 2013 combined World Championships at the same place.
The two winners will represent Colombia at the 48th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup (date and venue tbd); the top 2 men and women will participate in the inaugural World Singles championships to be held from Sept. 18-26 at Galactica Bowling Center in Limassol, Cyprus; and players ranked 3-6 go to the South American Championships Oct. 13-20 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
