Bowling News USA - November 17, 2011 Storm Sponsored McKendree Women's Bowling Team Wins First Tournament of Season!

(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 14)—After taking six tournament titles in 2010-11, the McKendree University women's bowling team has broken through with its first tourney crown of the 2011-12 campaign.

The Bearcats captured first place in the S.I. Elite Classic, which was held Saturday and Sunday at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights. McKendree opened its nine-game run by shooting a 986 in the first game and never looked back to post the win. The Bearcats racked up 8,789 pins to finish 384 ahead of runner-up Lindenwood University.

McKendree also had a pair of JV squads competing in the 12-team field, who finished ninth and 10th respectively.

For individual honors, the Bearcats were well-represented in the top 20. Six McKendree bowlers placed in the top 20, including each of the top four slots. Senior Jessica Spires (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln-Way Central) (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) won the individual crown, averaging 212 over the nine-game block. Senior Brandi Branka (Momence, IL/Bishop McNamara) (Momence, Ill./Bishop McNamara) posted a 210.9 average to finish as the tournament runner-up.

Senior Kayla Rothzen (Media, IL/West Central) (Media, Ill./West Central) placed third with an average of 203.3, and fellow senior Mary Bellus (Morris, IL/Morris) (Morris, Ill./Morris) was fourth at 203.2. Junior Christine Gill (Lakewood, CO/Lakewood) (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) took eighth place for McKendree by averaging 192.2. Rounding out the list of top performers for the Bearcats was senior Miranda Brittin (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West), who grabbed 20th place with an average of 186.5.

McKendree will return to the lanes Nov. 25-26 when it hosts the National Team Match Games at St. Clair Bowl.
