Bowling News USA - January 17, 2011 One Million Dollar PBA Tournament of Champions Lifts Off

The 46th Professional Bowlers Association Tournament of Champions got underway Sunday afternoon at Red Rock Lanes with the first round of Champions Field qualifying.
The Champions Field will bowl a second seven-game round Monday morning to determine the 50 players who will join the tournament’s Elite Field for the duration of the $1 million event. The Champions Field includes players who have won four or fewer PBA Tour titles or a PBA Regional, PBA Women’s Series, PBA Senior Tour or PBA Senior Regional title.
Among the notable players in the top 50 after seven games is 2009 PBA Mixed Doubles Championship winner and PBA regional titlist Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., who was in sixth place. Two other women in contention to advance to the Elite Field were two-time PBA Women’s Series winner Carolyn Dorin-Ballard in 27th and Diandra Asbaty, who won the Bayer Don and Paula Carter Mixed doubles with Brian Voss last season in 37th.
Brian Ziesig, who became the only amateur to win a standard Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title last season by winning the Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship, is in 13th.
Finland’s Osku Palermaa, who finished fourth in the PBA World Championship earlier in the day at South Point Lanes, finished the first round in 32nd.
Players who are automatically seeded into the “Elite Field” are: 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exempt players; any player who was listed among the “50 Greatest Players in PBA History” during the PBA Tour’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2009; any PBA Hall of Famer; any player who has won five or more PBA Tour titles; any player who has won a PBA major title, and winners of the 2010 PBA Senior U.S. Open, USBC Senior Masters, PBA Regional Players Championship and Regional Players Invitational.
The combined Elite Field will begin qualifying on Monday evening. All bowlers will bowl 20 games in four five-game blocks to determine the top 54 who will advance into the Cashers Round.
After two seven-game blocks in the Cashers Round, the top 24 based on 36 total games will advance to a traditional 24 games of round-robin match play. At the conclusion of match play, the top four will advance to the ABC stepladder finals on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2:30 PM Eastern.
