Bowling News USA - August 17, 2010 Storm Staffer Mark Williams Maintains Lead at PBA Senior Pepsi Open

With a 3,616 16-game overall pinfall (226 average), Storm staffer Mark Williams of Beaumont, Texas, maintained his lead after the second round of qualifying in the PBA Senior Pepsi Open Monday at Spare Time Lanes.

In Monday’s second eight-game round, the PBA Hall of Famer had a 1,784 pinfall (223 average) with games of 232, 219, 178, 200, 255, 234, 233 and 233 stretching his lead to 124 pins over fellow Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., in second with 3,492. Roto Grip staffer Tom Baker is fourth (3439).

The field of 109 players has been cut to the top 32 who will advance to best-of-five-game match play Tuesday morning . As a result of qualifying in the top eight Williams and Williams Jr. earned a two-round bye.

“I was able to put together a good five-game battle plan for match play from what I learned after today’s round,” said Mark Williams, who won the Senior U.S. Open in June for his third career Senior Tour title. “With less games in match play you’re going to have to make the most of a fresh lane condition and then be able to read the lanes and make adjustments much quicker than you would have to in qualifying.”

Williams and Williams Jr., who are not related, are contenders for Senior Player of the Year with only the Senior Jackson (Mich.) Open remaining in the 2010 season after the Decatur stop. Williams is second in Senior Player of the Year points and Williams Jr., who won the PBA Senior Miller High Life Classic in his Senior Tour debut in May, is third trailing points leader Hall of Famer Wayne Webb of Columbus, Ohio.

Webb, who was the winner of the USBC Senior Masters and Senior Columbus Open earlier this season, qualified 12th after Monday’s second round with 3,317 and will receive a one-round bye for Tuesday’s match play.
