Bowling News USA - July 19, 2010 Belmo, Vanessa Fung Roll to Victory on ABF Tour

Vanessa Fung from Hong Kong, China, and Storm staffer Jason Belmonte, Australia, captured the women's and men's title in the 7th and penultimate leg of the 2010 Asian Bowling Federation Tour at Jaya Ancol Bowling Center in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The top 16 Asian bowlers from the Indonesia Open qualified for the made-for-TV event that offered rankling points but no prize money. The top 16 men and the top 16 women in the ABF Tour rankings at the end of the season will bowl for money in the Tournament of Champions in January 2011 (venue tbd).

The women's Indonesia leg was a low-scoring affair with just six 200 games out of 32 single-elimination match play games.

Vanessa Fung eliminated Raniia Nugroho, Indonesia, in the opening round, 202-192, and survived a close Round of 8 match against Ivana Hie, Indonesia, 196-192. In the semifinals, Fung easily defeated Saowapha Kunaksorn, Thailand, 186-147, to advance to the title match against Kim Eun Jung, Korea.

Fung topped the former Asian and ABF Tour ranking champion, 184-178 to win her third career ABF Tour title en route to overtake the lead in the 2010 ABF Tour women's ranking.

PBA touring pro Jason Belmonte, who was voted 2008-2009 PBA Rookie of the Year after winning his first PBA title, started the men's Round of 16 with a bang, defeating Macau leg winner Joshua Chow, Hong Kong, 280-195.

The two-hander (pictured ) advanced to the semifinal with a 205-178 win over Surasak Manuwong, Thailand, in which he flew past Rudy Goenawan, Indonesia, 265-173, to set up a title match against local favorite Oscar.

Oscar eliminated Indonesia's No. 1. Ryan Lalisang, Indonesia, in the opening round, 205-174, and his compatriot Hengky Susanto, Indonesia, in the Round of 8, 256-180. In the semis, Oscar eliminated Phiriyahbhoon P., Thailand, 188-177, to advance to the title match.

The men's title match was the most exciting of the entire Indonesia leg. Oscar took an early lead thanks to a four-bagger, but Belmonte narrowed the gap to 13 pins heading into the final frames. Finishing first, Oscar was unable to shut out the Aussie but forced him to double in the 10th frame to win the title.

Working on three strikes, Belmonte closed things out with a double and a 9-count to wrap up the title, 244-237. With the 75 ranking points for the victory Belmonte moved into the top 16 in the 2010 men's ranking.

The 8th and final leg of the 2010 Asian Bowling Federation Tour will be held Sept. 19 at Hong Kong Bowling City in Hong Kong, China, following the 36th Hong Kong International Open, which will run from Sept. 9-18, 2010.
