The 107th United States Bowling Congress Tournament that concluded July 5 was one Minnesotans Matt McNiel, John Kreyer Jr., and Steve Bohn won't forget. McNiel established a USBC Open record in all events at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, NV., and Kreyer/Bohn soared to Eagle status in the Doubles Event.

The regular doubles title was claimed by the duo of John Kreyer Jr. (Fridley, MN) and Steve Bohn of (Norwood, MN) who rolled to victory with 1,514. Kreyer shot an 816 on games of 258-279-279. Bohn rolled games of 248-204-246 for a 698.

Both bowlers were armed with Storm equipment. Kreyer used a Second Dimension, while Bohn used a Special Agent and Second Dimension.

"It's a great feeling," Kreyer said. "The 300 here was magical, and the 800 just felt like the icing on the cake. Last time was more for my family, and this one for the doubles lead meant a lot, too.

McNiel rolled the highest all-events total in the 107-year history of the tournament in the regular all events. The 25-year-old left-hander rolled a 2,326 for his nine games. He posted an 806 in singles, 780 in the team event and 740 in doubles. McNiel marked in 88 of the 90 frames that he rolled. The total topped the previous record of 2,321 set last year in Las Vegas by Ron Vokes of Racine, Wis.

The regular singles winner was Terrence Syring of Bay City, Mich. Syring posted games of 276-258-299 for an 833 total.

The regular team title went to the Bowlers Edge Pro Shop of Neenah, Wisc. It rolled 3,408 and was paced by Jason Wendt (727), Tim Rice (716), Kenny Kempf (675), Brad Kurh (653) and Dan Paul (637). The team posted games of 1,050, 1,115 and 1,243.
The classified team crown went to Southeast Paint of Price, Utah. It posted games of 878, 930 and 1,000 for a 2,808.

The classified doubles crown went to the husband and wife duo of Mark and Daphne Thompson of Snyder, Texas. The pair rolled a 1,207 on the strength of Mark's 624 and Daphne's 583.

David Ackerman of Lena, Ill., took the classified singles crown with a 688 on games of 200-262-226. The classified all-events winner was William Gibboney, Jr. of Douglasville, Ga. He rolled a nine-game total of 1,819, posting a 674 in the doubles, 575 in singles and 570 in the team event.

The tournament began on Feb. 20 and ran 136 days. During its run, the event drew 14,189 five-player teams and more than 70,000 bowlers. This year saw seven series of 800 or better, along with 32 perfect games, 13 299 performances and five 298 games. The 108th edition will be held again in Reno beginning in February of 2011.
