Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., momentarily slipped into second place, but fired a 288 game to regain the top qualifying position in the Professional Bowlers Association’s Earl Anthony Memorial at Earl Anthony’s Dublin Bowl Thursday.

Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, led the field of eight women who advanced to match play in the women’s portion of the tournament.

Jones, a 12-time PBA Tour winner who hasn’t won since 2008, averaged 232 for 14 games of qualifying to lead the field of 28 men into the best-of-seven-game, single-elimination match play competition Friday. Jones finished with 3,249 pins. Storm's Jason Belmonte was second, 25 pins behind.

Roto Grip staffer Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio, was third with a 3,122 total followed by Mike Wolfe of New Albany, Ind., at 3,112 and Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, at 3,096. The top four – Jones, Belmonte, Kretzer and Wolfe – earned byes for the first round of match play.

Chris Barnes’ wife Lynda, who grew up in nearby Concord, Calif., and starred as a collegiate bowler at San Jose State University, averaged 208.43 to finish qualifying in the women’s event with 2,918 pins and an 18-pin edge over Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y.

Other women advancing to match play were Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev.; Jodi Woessner, Oregon, Ohio; Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J.; Shannon Pluhowsky, Kettering, Ohio; Stefanie Nation, Grand Prairie, Texas, and Lindsay Baker, Amherst, N.Y.

Friday’s match play elimination rounds which will cull the fields to four men and two women for the live ESPN finals Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern (10 a.m. Pacific).

The Earl Anthony Memorial is dedicated to the late superstar who was recognized as the greatest player in PBA history last January during the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration. Anthony, the first player in PBA history to earn $1 million, was a 43-time PBA Tour champion.
