Bowling News USA - January 4, 2010 Further Proof That Bowlers Are the Most Generous People

When the Houston Area Special Olympics Bowling Tournament for 2009 was held recently, there was a big bonus for the competitors: a dozen lightweight bowling balls to be given away by random drawing, courtesy of the folks at Storm Products Inc. The story of one ball winner, in particular, stood out to Tournament Committee member Derek Adams.

Joseph Bell has been in a group home for many years, and it had been difficult to get Joseph to engage in any activities,” Adams says. “Through encouragement, Joseph started bowling, and ever since has become a much more outgoing person.” And when Joseph’s name was announced as one of the ball winners, not only was he thrilled, but so were the folks involved with his Spring Panthers group. Why? Because Joseph had told them that all he wanted for Christmas was a bowling ball of his own.

Enough money was collected on the spot for the ball to be drilled and for Joseph to be outfitted with new bowling shoes and a rolling bag for his new ball. Adds Adams: “The delegation head, who told me Joseph’s story, was in tears with happiness for him, and couldn’t thank us enough.” Other ball recipients were similarly grateful. Before being delivered to Houston for the event by Storm’s Tyler Jensen, the discontinued balls had been languishing in a storage unit. “Looks like it was about the best thing I could have done with those balls,” Jensen notes.
