Doug Kent wins a thriller over Michael Mak with a score of 192 to 180 to capture the 2009 Euro-Med Storm International Masters Challenge. Hong Kong’s youth bowler Michael Mak, only 15 years of age, out shined the other stars of the game and led the top 24 qualifiers in the second stage of the Challenge held at Paeng’s Midtown Bowl in Robinsons Place, Malate. The Asian Youth Games gold medalist rolled a 1957 series for eight games to lead the top eight players to the next stage. Cha Mi Jung from Korea is the only female player left in the finals. She had a series of 1802 to finish second to Mak. Cha had rolled the first “300″ of the tournament. Malaysian and Indonesian Champion Zulmazran Zulkifli finished in third with a 1847 series.
Storm staffer and PBA Rookie of the Year on the Rhino Page was fourth. Rhino is the only south paw left in the field of eight and also helped Team U.S.A. win two Gold medals in the World Mens Championship held in Thailand last year. Page also has three PBA titles under his belt, the Go Rving, the Lumber Liquidators Shark Championship, and the Lumber Liquidators Viper Championship. World Youth Master’s gold medalist Aaron Kong from Malaysia rolled a 1838 series to finish in fifth place. Asia’s top kegler from U.A.E., Hussain Al-Suwaidi made a big run at the end to get into the next stage with a 1823 series. Hussain won the ABF Tour in Kuwait and Thailand this year. The seventh and eighth spot belonged to two american professional bowlers representing Ebonite. John Nolan and Doug Kent rolled 1817 and 1814 respectively to clinch their spots. John won the USBC masters and Regional Player Invitational earlier in the year. Doug has won the USBC masters in 1991 and 2006, the World Championship in 2001 and 2006. Kent was also the PBA Player of the Year in 2006.
In the third stage of the finals the bowlers bowled a round robin format with the eighth game being a position round. Doug Kent showed the crowd why he was a former PBA Player of the Year as he led from start to finish with a series of 1907. Michael Mak rolled a 238 game in the position round to move from fourth to the second seed in the step ladder finals with an aggregate score of 1849. Cha Mi Jung’s 1830 puts her in third position just two pins ahead of John Nolen. These four bowlers moves into the last stage of the finals in a step ladder finals.
Cha Mi Jung rolled a 202 score plus 8 pins and defeated John Nolen who bowled a 200 game to advance to the next match against Michael Mak of Hong Kong. Cha started the match with the first four strikes and finishing with a 248 game plus 8 for a 256 game. Unfortunately for her, Michael started with the first 11 strikes and finished with a 296 game.
The challenge was trully exciting with great competiton and nail biting moments. Three perfect games were bowled and the matches were close and intense. 160 bowlers participated from 16 countries representing the three zones.
