Bowling News USA - September 11, 2009 Storm goes 1-2-3 at the Thon Norwegian Open

Storm staff member Mads Sandbækken from Norway held off two Englishmen en route to win the "major" tournament of his country, the Thon Norwegian Open 2009 Sunday at Metro bowling center in Lörenskog, Oslo, Norway.

Sandbækken as well as Dominic Barrett and Nick Froggatt, both England, reached the finals after leading their respective groups in the third round of the finals. In a high-scoring semifinal, Barrett (288) and Sandbækken (231) eliminated Froggatt (223) to advance to the title match.

Sandbækken saved his best for last to cruise to victory, 245-211. The winner received 30.000 Norwegian Kronor or approx. 3.480 Euro. Barrett earned 15.000 for second and Froggatt garnered 9.000 for third place.

A total of 38 of 128 players qualified for the finals. The top 2 qualifiers bypassed the first two rounds of the final while players seeded 3-8 received one bye.

Sandbækken (21st) and Froggatt (9th) had to bowl the first round, while Barrett, seeded 4th, started in Round Two. Sandbækken (675) and Froggatt (643) made the cut to top 14 in second and sixth place, resp.

Three women, Ann Louise Haugen Andersen, Norway, who led Round 1 with 683 including 24 pins handicap, as well as Nina Flack, Sweden and Heidi Thorstensen, Norway, advanced to the second round, where all three were eliminated. Froggatt made the cut to the top 10 in 4th place (681), while Barrett (636) and Sandbækken (634) landed in 8th and 9th place. 

Those ten joined qualifying leaders Svein Roger Olsen, Norway, and Lars Lindbäck, Sweden, and were seeded into three groups of four players.

The group leaders after three games advanced to the "Carousel" finals. Barrett led Group 1 with 705 (225, 236, 244), Froggatt topped Group 2 with 708 (235, 246, 227) and Sandbækken finished first in Group 3 with 690 (181, 297, 212).
