Storm Nation - January 2, 2009 Storm sponsored UNO Men Light It Up in Sin City
Name: Kevin Ellis
Storm Product: HY-Road
Accomplishment: The UNO men’s bowling team finished the first semester on a high note, rolling to a third place finish at the Tier 1 Sam’s Town Collegiate Shootout, and immediately followed it up with a matching third place effort at The Las Vegas Invitational December 20-23 in Las Vegas, NV. UNO opened the week's competition at Sam's Town Bowling Center for the Sam's Town Collegiate Shootout. The Mavs struggled during day one’s three 4-team matches, awarding 80 pins per team defeated and 40 pins for each team tied (Barnhart Match Play System). UNO posted a 6-3 match play record and found themselves in 15th place. Day two competition included three team games and four 4-game baker matches also using the Barnhart Match Play system. After posting an 8-1 record during the three team games, the Mavs totalled 3,449 (215.56 avg) over the 16 baker games, and closed with a 12-0 record in baker play for an impressive 4,409 total, vaulting to a 3rd place finish behind Wichita State and Calumet College. UNO’s 3,449 baker total included games of 279 and 285, in which the Mavs amassed the front 9 and front 10 strikes in a row respectively. Both games came in the second of four baker matches, along with games of 226 and 195 for an astounding 985 four game total. Nick Riedler paced the Mavs with 1,177 over the six game singles event, averaging 196.16, and was followed closely by Freshman Joe Ladwig at 1,167 (194.5). At the Las Vegas Invitational, the Mavericks found themselves in first place after three games with a third game scratch score of 1,220 (J. Gartner 212, T. Kotrous 233, K. Armstrong 255, J. Ladwig 277, T. McTaggart 243), which will likely remain among the highest team games in collegiate bowling this season. UNO never fell below 6th place during the 9-game qualifier, and found themselves solidly in third place going into the 16 team, best of 5 bracket, behind Wichita State and Fresno State-A. Ladwig paced the Mavs during qualifying, with a 9-game total of 1,959 (217.67 avg), capping a great week for the freshman with his first collegiate top-10. Qualifying in third, UNO earned two byes, advancing into the third round of match play. In the round-of-eight match, UNO dispatched Fresno State-B 3-1, with scores of 225-202, 211-191, 202-214, 235-169, earning a ticket to face off with Fresno State-A in the round of four. Fresno State-A had defeated North Texas 3-0 in the round of 8. The Mavs never found a groove against the eventual champion Bulldogs, dropping the match 0-3 (161-192, 223-264, 151-211), and settled for a third place finish in bracket play behind Fresno State and Wichita State to wrap up a great week of competition. “It's as good a performance as we’ve ever had,” stated Head Coach J. J. Mastny. “This trip is always an important swing during the season, and the guys came up big. We’ve only been in the top five one other time at a Tier 1 (2nd - 2005 Sam’s Town Shootout), so it’s a huge deal for them. Things really came together, especially in baker play. It’s a great way to start the second half of the season.” UNO has found great success using Storm products this season according to Coach Mastny. “Partnering with Storm has been outstanding for us. We’ve had great luck with everything, especially the new HyRoad. That ball has been a huge hit ever since we punched our first one. The whole team wanted them,” Mastny commented. UNO will begin second semester events on January 17-18 with the Eagles NAIA Baker Challenge, hosted by Robert Morris College in Chicago, IL.
